Quality, Prestige and Authenticity are the key elements behind what is considered by many connoisseurs as one of the best brandies in Portugal.

When António Gil Guedes (4th generation) discovered a distilled drink aging in secret over several years, left behind by his father Roberto Guedes, he became curious about its quality. After conferring with friends in Cognac, António Guedes realized that he had inherited a nectar worthy of an alchemist. Thus in 1971 Adega Velha vinic brandy was born, produced even today with the knowledge and prodigious memory of master winemakers.

Adega Velha

The Old Winery

This building is a very special place at Quinta da Aveleda: it was the first winery to be built in 1885, at the time with a capacity for 280 barrels of wine when only 12 barrels were produced. The constant temperature and humidity and the low lighting are determining factors during the years of rest of the brandies that pass through here.

The Region

In order to produce a great brandy, the base wine should have low alcohol content and high acidity. In Portugal, the region that best assures these characteristics is the Vinho Verde Region, whose wines have very particular features. They combine the region's traditional grape varieties, that mature in a cool climate with ocean influence. The Adega Velha brandies are produced from the distillation of red wines from this region, that blend the right amount of complexity and freshness, with intense fruit aromas. The wine is then distilled in a Charentais alembic and aged in French oak barrels from the region of Limousin.

The Alchemy

The mastery of creating spirits of superior quality involves experience, careful monitoring of the distillation process and sensitivity to its aromas and characteristics. This leads us to the perfect blend. Always respecting the tradition and values that have been passed on by the Guedes family from generation to generation, our Adega Velha brandies preserve the freshness of the region's varieties and the expressiveness found in the first brandy, more than 50 years ago, in the old winery of Quinta da Aveleda.
