Quinta Vale D. Maria was one of the pioneer projects that expanded the recognition of the great Douro wines around the world.
The deep respect for biodiversity is reflected in the genuine expression of each wine. Each one tells a story, the story of the vineyard that gave birth to it. A deep knowledge of the Douro, and the combination of traditional winemaking techniques with modern winemaking practices, make of each Quinta Vale D. Maria wine a unique experience. As one of the founding members of the Douro Boys, Quinta Vale D. Maria had an important role in the internationalization of the great Douro wines. Its international acclaim, reflected by scores and distinctions, is the natural result of the consistent quality of these unique and rare wines.
The first records of Quinta Vale D. Maria, located on the banks of the Torto river, on the slopes of Cima Corgo, date from 1868. In the beginning, the grapes were sold to produce Port wine. In 1996, this Quinta was acquired by the van Zeller family, and the Quinta Vale D. Maria brand was born.
Douro
Douro is an emblematic region in the Portuguese wine industry, being the first in the world to be demarcated and regulated (first by Marquês de Pombal, in 1757-61). Quinta Vale D. Maria is in the Cima Corgo sub-region, the heart of the Douro. Here the historic terraces of vineyards create a stunning landscape, carved by man. Later, following the footsteps of D. Maria I, Quinta Vale D. Maria ventures to explore the terroir of a new sub-region (included in the demarcations made by the Queen D. Maria I, from 1788 to 1793) – the Douro Superior, at Quinta Vale do Sabor.
